At Billesley Primary School, we aim to provide a music education that not only imparts knowledge of music and exposure to different genres, but also enriches our pupils' lives. Music has the power to inspire, uplift and increase confidence, and we are dedicated to making sure our pupils get the best possible start in their musical journey.
During Key Stage 1, children are taught fundamental music concepts like pitch, tempo, and rhythm. A specialist music teacher provides half a term of drumming instruction, enabling the students to develop basic percussion skills. Another half term is focused on singing, where students explore various genres of music.
As students progress into Key Stage 2, the curriculum becomes more structured and challenging. The ukulele is introduced at this stage and is taught by a specialist music teacher for half a term. Another half term focuses on singing, with an emphasis on exploring a different genre of music each year, such as jazz, blues or world music.
Throughout their time at Billesley, children develop an ability to listen to, and appreciate a wide variety of music whilst also having the opportunities to discuss and express ideas and feelings. Our teaching approach aims to be student-centred and inclusive, ensuring that each child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to engage with the music curriculum.
