At Billesley Primary School, the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils is at the heart of school life and is embedded into our curriculum and wider school opportunities. Through our bespoke PSHE curriculum, we prepare children for life in modern British society, guiding them as they grow into healthy, informed, confident, and active citizens. British values are fundamental to our PSHE offer, as well as the principles of global citizenship, in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Our PSHE lessons are just one way our children are introduced to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. All children are taught that they have rights, which they are free to enjoy and exercise, as well as the role that adults play in ensuring children have access to these rights.
Our concept-based PSHE curriculum embeds 3 core concepts: holistic health; identity; and feelings and awareness.
Through the concept of holistic health, we explore physical, emotional and mental health and wellbeing. Our mission is to promote physically healthy and emotionally satisfying lifestyles by raising pupils’ feelings of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-worth. Children are taught to identify and articulate their feelings and emotions, and develop strategies for self regulation. They also learn about the importance of keeping their bodies healthy through active lifestyles, balanced diets, good hygiene practices and exercising personal safety.
When exploring identity, we embed into the curriculum the importance of global citizenship and how pupils can contribute and make changes to their world around them, including caring for the environment. We encourage children to explore and develop their own values, beliefs and spiritual awareness. Children learn that they are all special and unique by identifying their own positive attributes and forming personal goals. The need to show respect and understanding, to others whose values and beliefs may differ from our own, underpins the entirety of their learning.
Our concept of feelings and awareness focuses on how we can build and nurture positive relationships with others. Children are taught what a positive and healthy relationship looks like, including how to be a good friend, respecting those who are different from us, dealing with conflict within relationships, and considerations when making friends online. We teach children what bullying is, including in online contexts, the consequences of hurtful behaviour, and what to do if we think we, or others around us, are being bullied.
