At Billesley primary school, we use a scheme called Language Angels to progress through our chosen modern foreign language of French. The scheme is planned by foreign language teaching specialists and linguists and provides our children with great opportunities to learn new vocabulary, apply it and share it with their peers. Modern Foreign Languages is taught explicitly from year 3 but children of younger ages are given many opportunities to explore our chosen language in different ways, such as answering the register with Bonjour!
All of the year groups from Year 3 begin with a topic which looks at the phonetics of the language, helping the children with their pronunciation of key words and looks at the differences in alphabet. They then progressively delve into many relatable topics such as favourite fruits, musical instruments, the classroom and many others. Throughout each unit, the children are given opportunities to apply their new skills with their peers. We also track their achievements at the end of the units so we can see how brilliantly they are doing.
Modern foreign languages are a very important lesson for our children, even though some are already bilingual. It opens up many doors later in life and helps us build on skills in which we learn through our writing and geography curriculums already. We hope with your support, interest and enthusiasm, Modern Foreign Languages can become a thriving subject in school in which we can show our children to be keen linguists.
